Given the early success of Connections, the decision has been made that it is not necessary to pilot Connections for another year. Rather, we are developing a plan to launch Connections: Acadia’s First Year Option in the fall of 2011. Hence, we will not be offering Connections courses during the 2010/2011 academic year.We are planning to launch Connections in a sustainable manner in the fall of 2011.
CONNECTIONS:Acadia’s First Year Option was piloted this year, with 12 faculty offering three trans-disciplinary Connections courses each term to 19 students in the fall term and 20 students in the winter semester. Survey and focus group data indicate that Connections has proven to serve as a successful transition from high school to university and that the students have benefitted from the dialogue and debate that occurs when two professors share their different perspectives. The faculty have also described teaching Connections courses as invigorating and academically rewarding.
CONNECTIONS builds on the strength of that tradition by encouraging first-year students to take responsibility for their own education, to be active members of a community, and to develop a passion for learning.
