CONNECTIONS simply offers first-year students the option of choosing thee courses in one!
Normally, each semester first-year students choose two courses required by their major and degree program, and another three courses as their "electives". Sometimes it's not easy to decide what electives might be most useful or interestiing. By choosing CONNECTIONS, students are automatically registered in 3 elective courses that are co-requisites--they are taken together as a package: one choice, 3 courses!
Students may choose to register in both semesters of CONNECTIONS or in either the fall or winter semesters. Within each semester, students take three CONNECTIONS courses. Due to the integral nature of CONNECTIONS, these courses are not offered as stand-alone courses—they must be taken together. Students will be given one final grade for all three of the CONNECTIONS courses, which will appear on their transcript as an identical grade for all three courses. (Students will receive 5 credits each term for their three CONNECTIONS courses and their other two regular courses.)
A student’s choice of program and major can be in Arts, Science, or Business Administration. In addition to their three CONNECTIONS courses, they select another two courses that will fulfill their chosen program and major requirements. A CONNECTIONS student in the Bachelor of Science program majoring in Biology, for example, would take Biology 1113 and Chemistry 1013 during the fall semester in addition to the three CONNECTIONS courses. CONNECTIONS students will be advised about program requirements by the CONNECTIONS Coordinator and by the head or director of the program to which they have been admitted.
BA (all majors), BSc (Psychology, Biology, Math, Geology, Physics), are all fully compatible with connections; BBA is partlly compatible (students can take only one semester of CONNECTIONS). This means that you can fulfill degree requirements in 4 years as long as you complete a full course load each fall and winter term.
Programs that require students to take more courses in the first year than taking CONNECTIONS allows for are: Nutrition, Computer Science, Chemistry and Engineering (2yr). To complete the degree requirements for these programs, you will need to take one or more of: spring or summer intersession course(s), on line course(s), course overload(s), or even an extra term. This may mean spending more than 4 years at Acadia. Using the on-line, intersession, or overload options you can still complete these degree programs in the normal 4 academic years. Please consult your major department for more information. Students seeking admission to CONNECTIONS and one of these programs must first consult the Coordinator as well as the department of your major for advisement and permission.
